Define better, please.

It's a matter of personal preference. The 2 most important reasons why I choose i3wm over Awesome are:

  • i3's superb window management. You can freely (and really easily) customise the windows layout exactly how you want it.
  • much cleaner config syntax.

I converted from Awesome and will update this as I discover more:

  • really more sensible multi-monitor handling - duplicating the full amount of tabs for each monitor is really too much to remember where anything is
  • multi monitor is done technically better - sending apps between monitors in Awesome up to 3.4.11 had various quirks, in i3 everything has been resized and tiled correctly = just works (tm)

As far as NVidia binary blob is concerned, it's only recently that it's got better when they (NVidia) introduced full xrandr support in their beta driver. Until then with Xinerama (afaik) i3status on both displays had to be the same (miirror).

Have a look at the screencast, the userguide and try it on your machine to see for yourself if i3 is a better fit for your needs than other window managers :).
