I've been going trough a bunch of screenshots of people using i3 and custom i3 status bars.

Many use some symbolic font, which looks lovely but I have no clue which fonts are usable and which are not.. I'd prefer to install them using the debian repository.

In addition to the aforementioned Font Awesome, here are several other symbol fonts:

You could also make your own, even picking and choosing your favorites from multiple sets or uploading your own icons, using Fontello or IcoMoon. This would be one way to get the LAN/4JR symbol you want.

Here's a quite extensive source for UTF-8 codes: http://www.utf8icons.com/
Also I can recommend ttf-font-icons, available from the AUR for example.

Font awesome is exactly what I am looking for.. to be honest there's just one little thing I miss there and that's a LAN/RJ-45 symbol..
