To restore the good "size", I do a double fullscreen hot key. It's an easy fix, but I don't know if it's a Firefox's issue or a i3wm's one. Why should we workaround the issues of an application? Unless there is a reason why i3 is at fault, I suggest you file a bug against firefox for this. Not every time... In those cases closing and relaunching FF solved it.
