I haven't found a function to minimize windows. Have I missed it? If not, what do people do when they don't want a window taking up space on the current workspace temporarily, but don't want to move it to another workspace where it doesn't really belong?
That calls for scratch pads.

And as far as I know it is not possible and will never be supported because that's not the i3 way.
Sending a window to the scratchpad gets it out of the way quickly, but once I've done that to a few windows, getting back the one I want seems cumbersome. 'scratchpad show' only shows one. I can repeat that until I see the one I want, but it's not very convenient.
Seems to me also that tabbed layout emulates having a panel with applications is use ala xfce panel/lxpanel etc

What's wrong with tabbing / stacking a window away?
Suppose I start a terminal and use it to start a GUI application. The terminal is useless most of the time, but I like it to be available in case there is some interesting output on stderr or stdout. The GUI application is Eclipse, let's say... So it generally demands my whole screen and it frequ
...frequently pops up new windows and dialog boxes. What sequence of keys (default binding) would I use to emulate the 'minimize' in this case? Assume my actions thus far have been [login] Mod1+enter eclipse enter. So I've got a terminal on the left and Eclipse on the right. Eclipse has focus.
