how to remove horizontal container
If I only have one open window in a horizontal container, how can I remove the container but leave the window intact?

You just move the window. As it is the last one in the container it will be moved out of it and the container will be closed. The direction depends on the layout of the surrounding container (outside of the hirizontal container). On horizontally split and stacked containers moving up should have the desired effect, in vertically split and tabbed container moving left should do.
