Bringing a floating window on top? [closed]

I have a problem when I have several floating windows, where a window goes behind another one, and focusing it doesn't bring it back to top.

Is there a way to bring a window on top of another?

If you find yourself using floating windows all the time, maybe better use a floating window manager instead ;)

But seriously, there are some applications that focus a window matching a title. The most convenient imho is rofi, which has special bindings for i3, and can double as an application launcher.

I only use it for Steam, but when chat windows go behind main window, problems arise! This should be implemented IMHO if i3 support floating windows. Focus should bring the window on top, it's obvious.

Now I see what you mean. Floating is always on top, and there seems to be no way to switch focus. Sending the blocking window to the scratchpad is a workaround. But maybe this would count as a bug.

I'll file a bug/enhancement for it, thanks.

tigrezno, using the scratchpad feature should let you focus the window on demand. Your bug report may be closed, since floating windows [aren't intended to be used regularly](https://faq.i3wm.org/django.fcgi/question/772/floating-workspace/?answer=773) in i3. If at all possible, tile the window.

http://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html#_floating "Using this mode violates the tiling paradigm but can be useful for some corner cases like "Save as" dialog windows, or toolbar windows (GIMP or similar)." It seems like a valid question; there will be cases where one may need to re-order these windows.
