How would you go about adding custom margins to your windows like you can in awesome?

If you mean spaces between windows like in http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LGcjSAPwUQA... then the answer is: no, this is not possible, and it won’t be (it wastes screen space and i3’s explicit goal is to not provide any graphically fancy features).
