i3 is great wm, so I wanna use it inside MS Windows. Is it possible? Can I compile X somehow and then i3? Or maybe can I use i3 natively?

Only if you apply the GNU / Linux patch.

I compiled i3 successfully with cygwin. But I can not initialize it with startx.

I don't think its possible, i3 is a windowsmanager for X11. MS Windows handles windowmanagement completely fdifferent.

But there are tiling WMs for Windows out there.

well, there is openbox (cygwin.com/packages/openbox/) in cygwin. so it must be possible. but, only X windows would be managed. btw, cygwin is awesome.

Comments

forgot to mention, there is no socket in cygwin filesystem yet. so maybe is a limitation.

No, not that I know of. Somebody once tried to compile it with cygwin, but I never heard from that person again.
