I mean, the windows 95-like dull gray background colors of the windows in i3, it's a horrendous color. How do you change the color from grey to something like blue or white? I've tried client.background, but only get errors, or it doesn't work at all.

i3 doesn't have anything to do with the background colors of your applications. Set it depending on the GUI toolkit your apps are using (GTK/QT/etc).
