Are there (will there be) keyboard shortcuts to access icons in the system tray area?

I would like to know, wether there is a possibility to switch to the icons in the i3bar system tray area (or a possibility to configure such access, for that matter) - like say, batty, nm-applet or the jack icon. Using the mouse is quite tedious - and not very i3-ish...

No, because of how the tray specification works. i3bar only embeds windows provided by the applications, i.e. the icon is rendered by the application and the menu is provided by the application too. The standard does not specify any functionality that i3 could expose via a keyboard interface.
