Having to log in with unity first to link with a bluetooth device

I'm on Ubuntu 13.04. To link to a bluetooth keyboard, I have to log in through unity first, or it will fail. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Works for me with i3. Try asking in a Ubuntu forum.

Hi, I updated my post. THe device is showing now, but it will fail in i3. I have to log in through Unity, link to the bluetooth device there, and then log back in with i3.
