You can use one of the impressive iconic true type font sets that are around the web to get nice looking monochromatic icons in your i3 status bar without having to patch it at all.

For Arch users there are detailed instructions in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/I...fontsinthestatus_bar. For users of other distros it's as simple as getting the correct ttf files (you can easily figure out how to do that by looking at the PKGBUILD files for Arch) and putting them under /usr/share/fonts/TTF or any location where your ttf fonts happen to be. From that point on everything stated for Arch applies ditto to any distro.

I also use standard unicode characters to show some basic icons like @oscar.

Here is a link to my i3status.conf

This is how it looks like

And here you will find a comprehensive list of available unicode chars

I'm using standard Unicode characters in my bar.

edit:

Here's a decent list to get you started (there are a LOT of Unicode characters): www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/bloc...symbolsand_pictographs/list.htm

Screenshot of my bar: i.imgur.com/WrQ1zkt.png

(the font is Ubuntu 10)
