I set the "prefered applications" for browser or E-Mail?

asked Jun 5 '12

I want to set the default application for some filetypes. If I click on a E-Mail link, i want to fire up Thunderbird. If I download a PDF, evince should come up. Where can I define this kind of behaviour?

I think you are looking for the xdg-open configuration: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/...configfile

Changing xdg setting didn't work for me, but this worked: sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser (should work for Debian/Ubuntu)

There's also a mailcap file that is used to specify which applications should be used for files with different MIME types. It is located at $HOME/.mailcap or /etc/mailcap.
