What applets you need/want is totally up to you. There's no "recommended list" as everyone's needs are different. Not everyone is using the network-manager, so even nm-applet does not make sense for all.

Personally i use only nm-applet for managing wireless (on Arch Linux, but is cross-distro). I can advice parcellite as clipboard manager -- very useful if you don't remember basicallu nothing like me.

I use these on ubuntu, although xfce4-power-manager has stopped working for me since I switched to 14.10.

exec xfce4-power-manager
exec dropbox start
exec nm-applet

I also get an ibus applet, although I don't know what is starting it.
