Sound not working on built-in speakers
I'm running Ubuntu 14.04. Sound works fine in Unity, so I don't think there'd be a driver issue.
In i3, sound can't play out of my built-in speakers. If I plug in headphones, sound plays fine there.
Thanks!

My problem was that the system was set to mute and my keyboard control buttons were not set up correctly.

i3 doesn't do anything that affects audio output. I'm going to guess Ubuntu sets some special Pulseaudio settings when Unity is launched (like for volume control through a system tray icon or some such), and those settings are absent without Unity. Check your PA configuration.
