Monitoring openvpn state with i3blocks doesn't work

I'm not quite sure if it's OK to ask questions related to i3blocks and its contributed blocklets here, if not, please just give me a hint and I'll remove the question.

The openvpn blocklet doesn't work for me, independent whether I have openvpn running or not, the VPN state is down. Is there some special way to start the openvpn connection in order to have the blocklet working?

You can ask this, I guess, but why not open an issue against i3blocks on Github? Seems to make more sense to me.
