I can't get i3bar or i3-wsbar to display anything

I've created the config file in my home I've tried to get it working with i3bar but when I put anything to display, nothing happens.

bar {
     status_command i3status
}

Then I gave up and tried i3-wsbar with no result:

i3status | i3-wsbar -c "dzen2 -x %x -dock"

I'm using debian squeeze 64 bit and I'm trying to change from awesome to i3, any help would be appreciated.

How long did you wait? Old versions (< 2.6) of i3status might run into a timeout when starting.

Also, i3-wsbar is deprecated. Its pure existance shows that you use an old version of i3. Can you please upgrade to 4.3 and try again?
