How to make the highlighted split V/H border wider?

When I type $mod+h or $mod+v the vertical or horizontal bar, respectively, is highlighted. How can I change the width of this border? Also, this highlighted border appears only after I have set that with $mod+h or $mod+v. Can I make it appear for every new window?
