Sound does not work

I've installed i3wm on a fresh Ubuntu 13.04 installation, and I just can't hear anything. I've tried playing audio from Youtube on Google Chrome, wav files with play from sox, I've tried searching around but I couldn't find anything about this.
Sound works fine in Unity.

This is off-topic. Window manager has nothing to do with sound. You are just probably missing something being started as a part of Gnome session.

Hi,

Have you tried playing with 'alsamixer'? Just enter it in a terminal. It helped me multiple times when I had sound problems on my eeePc.

You can also test the speakers with 'speaker-test'.

Comments

Yeah, apparently the PCM slider in alsamixer was on 0. Putting it up fixed the problem.
