System load indicator is clipped in the i3bar

I'm starting out with i3 on Ubuntu. I tried running indicator-multiload and it runs fine and adds itself to the i3bar, but it's trimmed to a square, rather than being considerably wider. Is this a limitation of i3bar itself? Can I do anything about it?

indicator-multiload seems to be a GNOME applet. i3 doesn’t support these. i3bar only offers a system tray, which is quadratic (square) as per the specification.

That's what I guessed was the case. Is there a different bar that I can conveniently use which would support the general stuff i3bar supports (well, actually it's only the workspaces I care about) but with such applets also?
