How to accomplish simple panning capability for large windows?

I have a large VNC screen configured on the server which I'm viewing on a smaller resolution laptop. When I tile the vncviewer window in i3, vncviewer creates scrollbars to let you move around the larger area. This is slow and cumbersome. I would like to do something like "hold down right mouse button to pan/scroll around". Is this configurability somehow baked into Xorg (@version 1.12)?

I believe you could get more help by going to a VNC forum... as the problem is not actually with i3wm. But, as far as my experience goes, you could adjust the screen to fit your monitor...

If that's too bad, then you will need to find a way to make the VNC program ignore the command you are doing with the mouse (by default, they are transmitted to the remote machine).

Based on my research, this could be considered a window manager issue. This panning capability is not limited to this particular VNC app.

I don’t really see how this could be considered a window manager issue. Panning window contents in the window manager decoration is most likely accompanied by many side-effects and a work-around for a problem which should be solved in the application.

Therefore, I won’t implement or merge such a feature into i3. As to your original question: Not sure if Xorg allows for this in some way.
