workspace next cycles through workspaces. If I use it from the last workspace, i3 switches to the first workspace. How can I switch to a newly created workspace instead?

This script with -e | --empty flag will allow you to jump to the first empty numbered workspace. It might be something you're interested in. https://github.com/OliverUv/quickswit...

Thanks! I simply created a new keyboard shortcut for this command instead of worrying about how to make a single shortcut's action conditional on the workspace.
